{"id":11092,"date":"2016-06-02T17:36:14","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T15:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/en\/?p=11092"},"modified":"2016-06-02T17:36:14","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T15:36:14","slug":"serbian-pm-and-his-family-own-assets-worth-more-than-e-1-million-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/en\/serbian-pm-and-his-family-own-assets-worth-more-than-e-1-million-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Serbian PM and his family own assets worth more than \u20ac 1 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 and his family own seven properties worth more than \u20ac 1 million in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, and recently sold an eighth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>By: Stevan Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 and Pavle Petrovi\u0107<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two of the apartments were purchased from the state in the 1990s, apparently at bargain prices.<\/p>\n<p>And yet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-imovinski-karton1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s property declaration<\/a>, published on Serbia\u2019s Anti-corruption Agency web page, indicates he\u2019s one of the poorest statesmen in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He reports owning just one 30-square-meter studio flat, and no other property \u2013 no cars, no companies, no savings in the bank. His monthly wage is around \u20ac 1,000, so even buying the studio flat must have been a stretch for him.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107&#8217;s family, however, holds a large number of assets in Belgrade. They are mostly big apartments in expensive locations, according to an investigation by OCCRP\/KRIK reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister&#8217;s wife owns an apartment of more than 100 square meters, adjacent to his studio flat in the Belville residential complex. She bought it from a businessman the opposition claims is close to the government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-549x1024.png\" rel=\"prettyphoto\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-549x1024.png\" alt=\"vucic_infographic\" width=\"244\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-549x1024.png 549w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-161x300.png 161w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-78x146.png 78w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-27x50.png 27w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-576x1075.png 576w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic-40x75.png 40w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vucic_infographic.png 1025w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a>It is not clear who owns an apartment of 118 square meters, located in the upscale YUBC commercial and residential resort, which Vu\u010di\u0107 bought from the state in the 1990s. Although Vu\u010di\u0107 gave it to his ex-wife, who lives there today, the contract was never delivered to the Real Estate Cadastre, so Vu\u010di\u0107 is still the official owner.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s brother, meanwhile, owns a flat of 108 square meters in New Belgrade, the part of the Serbian capital that was built after the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>His parents own a family home of 200 square meters in Belgrade&#8217;s suburb of Jajinci; an apartment of 112 square meters in Belgrade city center; and an 80-square-meter flat in New Belgrade. Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s mother had one more flat, but she sold it for about \u20ac 75,000 during the OCCRP\/KRIK investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The family\u2019s most valuable apartment, at an estimated value of \u20ac 239,000 (US$ 272,000), is located in Krunska Street in the city center. Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s father got it at the end of the 1990s in an apartment exchange with the National Bank of Yugoslavia. \u00a0Experts say the bank lost money on the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The total value of the Vu\u010di\u0107 properties, not counting the recently sold apartment, is around \u20ac1,160,000. It is difficult to determine where the money to buy all of this came from.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2012, Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s monthly wage has been around \u20ac 1,000, while his wife\u2019s monthly salary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is around \u20ac 550. His parents An\u0111elko and Angelina are retired, and according to Vu\u010di\u0107&#8217;s statements they have monthly pensions of \u20ac 650 and \u20ac 730. The salary of Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s brother Andrej, who works at the National bank of Serbia, is unknown.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 20px; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; float: right; background-color: #d3d3d3; width: 50%; font-size: 80%;\"><strong>The value of apartments<\/strong><br \/>\nOCCRP\/KRIK journalists hired a real-estate agency to calculate the value of the apartments. A detailed calculation was done for each of them. The market value of apartments doesn&#8217;t necessarily correspond to the contract value. The agency involved didn&#8217;t want to be named in the story.<br \/>\nThe apartment in Jurija\u2019s Gagarina Street was not counted although Vu\u010di\u0107&#8217;s father is still its official owner according to the data from the Real Estate Cadastre. During the KRIK investigation, the Vu\u010di\u0107 family sold one apartment in Nikola Tesla Boulevard, so that one wasn\u2019t counted either.<\/div>\n<p>OCCRP\/KRIK researched this story as part of the investigation project \u201cSerbian officials\u2019 property,\u201d which is partly financed by readers. OCCRP and KRIK believe that citizens have the right to know about property of officials and their families. Because of this investigation, the pro-governmental tabloid \u201cInformer\u201d launched a smear campaign against KRIK journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 told OCCRP\/KRIK that he never had money and that his parents helped him to buy the studio flat in Belville and the apartment his ex-wife now lives in.<\/p>\n<p>He said that he doesn&#8217;t have anything to do with his wife&#8217;s apartment, or with assets that belong to his parents and brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou counted apples and oranges. You can&#8217;t find anything on me so you counted the assets of my father and my mother,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know what is the problem with everybody who thinks that they will find something on me? There is nothing to find. I never stole anything,\u201d said Vu\u010di\u0107. \u201cI don&#8217;t wear expensive clothes. I&#8217;m just interested in what I can do for my country and for my people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 said he overpaid for the apartment that he got from the state in the 1990&#8217;s, and said that his father did not get a sweet deal when he bought the apartment in Krunska street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Belville and Win-Win<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-garsonjera-u-Belvilu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">bought his studio flat<\/a>\u00a0in April of 2014, according to the sales contract reviewed by OCCRP\/KRIK. The flat is located in the New Belgrade business and residential resort Belville, which was built by Miroslav Mi\u0161kovi\u0107&#8217;s company. The apartment is now worth an estimated \u20ac 51,000.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-ugovor-za-garsonjeru-u-Belvilu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Vu\u010di\u0107 paid \u20ac 39, 000 for it<\/a>, according to the contract.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tamara-Djukanovic-200x300.jpg\" rel=\"prettyphoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tamara-Djukanovic-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tamara Djukanovi\u0107<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Based on his reported bank savings and current salary, it\u2019s hard to see how he could afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 told OCCRP\/KRIK that his parents helped him buy it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather bought me that studio flat,\u201d he said. \u201cMy parents sold an apartment, and my mother even sold a house in Be\u010dej (a city in northern Serbia), everything that she inherited from her parents, so I could buy that studio. I paid just a minor part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next to the studio is a larger apartment (104 square meters)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tamara-Djukanovic-ugovor-za-stan-u-Belvilu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">owned by his wife, Tamara \u0110ukanovi\u0107<\/a>. She also owns a large garage (12 square meters) in Belville. Together, her apartment and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tamara-Djukanovic-garaza-u-Belvilu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">garage<\/a>\u00a0are worth about \u20ac 196,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u0110ukanovi\u0107 has worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since August of 2010 as a counselor in the European department,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Ministarstvo-spoljnih-poslova_odgovor-KRIK-u1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">earning about \u20ac 550 per month<\/a>. She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tamara-Djukanovic-ugovor-za-stan-u-Belvilu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">bought the apartment in May of 2013<\/a>\u00a0for \u20ac 135,000, according to the sales contract.<\/p>\n<p>The seller was Slobodan Kvrgi\u0107, the owner of the Win-Win company which sells computers and related goods. Opposition parties say he is a businessman close to Vu\u010di\u0107. His businesses started to grow when Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s Serbian Progressive Party came to power, according to data from the Serbian Business Register Agency. The income of Kvrig\u0107&#8217;s main company has skyrocketed from \u20ac 100,000 in 2010 to \u20ac 14,500,000 in 2014, primarily due to public tenders.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 told OCCRP\/KRIK that his studio and his wife&#8217;s apartment are two entirely separate assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has nothing to do with [our] marriage status,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said. \u201cIt was bought separately. Her parents bought that apartment [a long time] before and they have both a loan agreement and a credit agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s explanation appears to directly contradict the evidence of the sales contract showing the transaction between Kvrigi\u0107 and his wife, although he offered no documents to support his version of events. He said he doesn&#8217;t know Kvrigi\u0107 and that Kvrgi\u0107 is not close to his government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know who that is. This is the first time I&#8217;ve heard of him,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said. \u201cI never saw the man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kvrgi\u0107 didn&#8217;t respond to OCCRP\/KRIK questions sent by e-mail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flats bought from the state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Vu\u010di\u0107 family bought two apartments from the state while Vu\u010di\u0107 was Minister of Information in Slobodan Milo\u0161evi\u0107\u2019s government from 1998-2000. Those apartments were bought at low prices, although Vu\u010di\u0107 says he can\u2019t remember exactly what they were. He says his position at the time had no impact on the purchases.<\/p>\n<p>In December of 1998, Vu\u010di\u0107 bought from the state a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-stan-u-Ju-biznis-centru1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">118-square-meter apartment<\/a>\u00a0in the building known as Little Red Riding Hood in the YUBC resort. I was not prepared to justify myself to you. After 2000, they asked for extra tax and I&#8217;ve paid that. I&#8217;ve paid so much they were very happy, because they managed to punish me,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 said that his family helped him to pay for the apartment, along with Vojislav \u0160e\u0161elj, leader of the Serbian Radical Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not the one who paid, it was mostly my father. That&#8217;s because I had no money, as I don&#8217;t have it today,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said. \u201cTo be thankful and fair, I think that also \u0160e\u0161elj helped and gave something (some money).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u0160e\u0161elj told OCCRP\/KRIK that he can\u2019t remember if he helped financially, but he did sign a request for Vu\u010di\u0107 to get the apartment. \u201cHe didn&#8217;t want to sign, even though he had a wife and child and they lived in 28 square meters.\u201d \u00a0\u0160e\u0161elj \u00a0says Vu\u010di\u0107 \u00a0was \u201ctoo modest\u201d to make the request himself.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 9, 2013, Vu\u010di\u0107\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-ugovor-za-stan-u-Ju-biznis-centru1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">signed over the apartment to his ex-wife<\/a>. This contract, however, was never delivered to the Real Estate Cadastre so, according to its records,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aleksandar-Vucic-stan-u-Ju-biznis-centru1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Vu\u010di\u0107 is still the owner<\/a>. Vu\u010di\u0107 said that making sure the change was filed was not his responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>The Vu\u010di\u0107 \u00a0family bought one other apartment from the state at a low price, OCCRP\/KRIK discovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swap with the bank<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s parents, Andjelko and Angelina,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Angelina-i-Andjelko-Vucic-stan-u-Krunskoj1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">own a large apartment<\/a>\u00a0in Krunska street in Belgrade\u2019s city center. This apartment, which measures 112 square meters, is the most valuable the family owns.<\/p>\n<p>Documents show that the apartment was purchased from the National Bank of Yugoslavia in 1998 in a very good deal for the family. Andjelko Vu\u010di\u0107 was working for the National Bank at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment had been owned by businessman Zlatan Peru\u010di\u0107, director of Beobanka bank,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Zlatan-Perucic-ugovor-o-otkupu1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">who bought it in 1992<\/a>. Peru\u010di\u0107 sold the apartment to a company called MM In\u017eenjernig in March of 1998. This company<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Narodna-banka-Jugoslavije-ugovor-o-kupovini-stana-u-Krunskoj1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sold it again to the National Bank of Yugoslavia<\/a>, which paid 2.3 million dinars (380,000 German marks at that time).<\/p>\n<p>Seven days later, the National Bank\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andjelko-i-Angelina-Vucic-ugovor-sa-NBJ-o-stanu-u-Krunskoj1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">validated a contract<\/a>\u00a0with An\u0111elko Vu\u010di\u0107 for an exchange of apartments. This contract was prepared 10 days before the bank bought the apartment from MM In\u017eenjering, according to the contract seen by KIRK reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107&#8217;s parents exchanged the 89-square-meter apartment in New Belgrade for this larger (112 square meters) apartment in the city center. Based on current market values, the apartment which they got from the National Bank is worth about \u20ac 240,000, or three times as much as the apartment they gave in exchange.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not clear why the National Bank agreed to the deal. Experts who talked to OCCRP\/KRIK said the exchange was not a good deal for the bank and appears to violate regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107 claims that the apartment was exchanged with the bank in 1997, when he wasn&#8217;t a minister. However, contracts that OCCRP\/KRIK got from the Real Estate Cadastre were signed in the summer of 1998, several months after Vu\u010di\u0107 was named minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do I have to do with that? We were not in power back in 1997, when my father exchanged the apartment. I have a contract which shows that happened in 1997,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 said. \u201cMy father exchanged an apartment at New Belgrade where they lived for 21 years and he paid in addition. Without me in power, without anything. I didn&#8217;t even know they were moving to the city center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other real estate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s parents own several other properties in Belgrade.<\/p>\n<p>His father owns an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Angelina-Vucic-stan-u-Klare-Cetkin1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">80-square-meter apartment<\/a>\u00a0in New Belgrade, in Klara Cetkin Street. The market price of this property and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andjelko-Vucic-garaza-u-Klare-Cetkin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">garage<\/a>\u00a0is \u20ac 111,000.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently his mother owned a 62-square-meter apartment in the Boulevard Nikola Tesla in New Belgrade, with a market value of \u20ac 74,000. She sold it in early 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest real asset that the family owns is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andjelko-Vucic-kuca-u-Jajincima.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">house in the Belgrade suburb of Jajinci<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the house to which Vu\u010di\u0107 brings important guests from abroad, including foreign officials.<\/p>\n<p>The house was built without a construction permit and has not been legalized, although the Department of Legalization confirmed to KRIK\/OCCRP that Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s family has asked for this issue to be resolved. The whole suburb was built illegally, without permits.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andjelko-Vucic-katastarski-plan-kuce-u-Jajincima.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">surveyor\u2019s document<\/a>, the house is owned by Andjelko Vu\u010di\u0107. The house is 174 square meters and it has a garage of 35 square meters. The market value is around \u20ac 141,000.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the smallest house in the neighborhood. Father took the lot in &#8217;92, &#8217;93 and began to build. It is not legalized because it was not possible to legalize anything at that place,&#8221; Vu\u010di\u0107 said. &#8220;(Father) has submitted request to legalize it for the fifth time, I hope this time successfully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cash and loan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107, the prime minister\u2019s brother, owns a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-stan-na-Novom-Beogradu.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">four-bedroom flat<\/a>\u00a0of 108 square meters. The apartment is located in New Belgrade and is worth about \u20ac 191,000.<\/p>\n<p>Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107 works at the National Bank of Serbia, but his earnings are unknown as the bank would not provide this information to KRIK\/OCCRP. In its written reply the institution just stated that Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107 has worked at the National Bank for more than 18 years and that he graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9996\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic.jpg\" rel=\"prettyphoto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9996\" class=\"wp-image-9996 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"Andrej Vucic\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-99x146.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-34x50.jpg 34w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-51x75.jpg 51w, https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Until he bought the apartment, his registered address was Krunska Street, where his parents still live.<\/p>\n<p>Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107 and his then-wife\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-ugovor-o-kupoprodaji-2008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">bought the apartment in April 2008<\/a>\u00a0for \u20ac 200,000. They transferred \u20ac 100,000 from their bank account, and the rest was financed from bank loans, according to the contract. The flat carries a mortgage of 156,000 Swiss francs (US$ 160,000).<\/p>\n<p>Four years later, Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107 divorced and bought out his former wife. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krik.rs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Andrej-Vucic-ugovor-o-kupoprodaji-2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">contract signed in September 2012<\/a>, he paid her \u20ac 40,000 (US$ 45,500).<\/p>\n<p>Andrej Vu\u010di\u0107 didn&#8217;t want to talk to KRIK\/OCCRP reporters. He only said that he is not a public figure and therefore he doesn&#8217;t want to appear in public.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister said it was unfair to question his relatives about their private business. \u201cWhat bothers you is that my brother has an apartment,\u201d said Vu\u010di\u0107. \u201cYou summed up my brother&#8217;s properties. You are investigating my dad, 75 years old, and my mom, 72 years old, and I find it interesting that you do that since nobody ever did it before and it has nothing to do with any kind of authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to tell you, there&#8217;s something else you have not [included],\u201d said Vu\u010di\u0107. &#8220;I have something even more valuable. You should come with me to Bugojno [in Bosnia], where we have houses that we haven\u2019t sold. Now my father is selling another apartment, probably the one in Clara Cetkin Street, to let you know He is selling it so he can build a house in Bugojno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pressures during the investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While working on this story, OCCRP\/KRIK journalists were exposed to pressure and sabotage. Some state institutions violated the Law on Free Access to Information of Public Importance and refused to provide data on the assets of the Vu\u010di\u0107 family.<\/p>\n<p>The Republic Fund for Pension and Disability Insurance refused to provide information about Vu\u010di\u0107\u2019s years of service. The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection has ordered the institution to provide the information to OCCRP\/KRIK.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 20px; margin-left: 10px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; float: right; background-color: #d3d3d3; width: 50%; font-size: 80%;\"><strong>Privacy<\/strong><br \/>\nJournalists collected only official information about the property. They did not interfere with privacy and in order to protect it, journalists have published only names of the streets where apartments are located, but not the exact addresses. The property of top officials is a legitimate topic worldwide.<\/div>\n<p>The Republic Geodetic Authority refused to provide documents relating to the change of ownership of real estate owned by the Vu\u010di\u0107 family. The Director of Cadastral Municipality Novi Beograd told KRIK journalists that the request was not answered because they are waiting for \u201cinstructions on how to proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the investigation, journalists were monitored and recorded on mobile phones by different unknown persons.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time a smear campaign began against KRIK and its editor.<\/p>\n<p>Dragan Vu\u010di\u0107evi\u0107, editor of the pro-government tabloid Informer, falsely accused and attacked KRIK and its editor Stevan Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 on the TV station Pink and then continued the attack in his newspapers for five days in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 and KRIK were feataured 10 times on the Informer\u2019s front page. Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 has been accused of being \u201ca fake journalist,\u201d \u201ca Western spy,\u201d \u201ca Mafia associate,\u201d \u201ca sado-masochist\u201d and \u201cterrorist.\u201d \u00a0Informer also wrote about internal details of a KRIK investigation, describing its progress, and revealed the working title of an unpublished story. The tabloid also published details of private correspondence and conversations between Doj\u010dinovi\u0107 and colleagues from other media.<\/p>\n<p>KRIK believes that those data were collected by surveillance of KRIK, most probably conducted by the intelligence agency, BIA.<\/p>\n<p>Most important members of the leading Serbian Progressive Party supported Informer, saying that the smear campaign against KRIK is simply freedom of the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformer is not my newspaper,\u201d Vu\u010di\u0107 told KRIK. \u201cIt is a private newspaper, but do not label it as mine because you do not like what it publishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am convinced that no one follows you as a journalist. That would be very bad for our country. Nor do I consider you a public enemy. I wish you successful work. I believe I can answer every question, even if you have only unpleasant ones.
